Four of the Most Common Computer Issues

November 15, 2018

Ah, computers. It seems that just about everyone owns one today, either for work or personal use, or both. While the technology is useful, it’s not unusual to have a love-hate relationship with your computer. Top frustration examples include screens that freeze often and applications that won’t install. Depending on your knowledge of technology and computers, you might consider turning to professional computer services in St. Charles County, MO for some desktop issues. Here are some of the most common computer problems that drive people crazy.

Blue screen of death

If your computer screen suddenly goes blue with white text, you have a problem. This is called the Blue Screen of Death, also known as BSoD or STOP Error, which is often accompanied by an error code (you can look up this code). Keep in mind that BSoD is a Microsoft Windows-related STOP error that usually indicates a serious problem with the hardware, software or driver. But as scary as this computer problem seems, all your computer may need is a manual reboot. Follow the codes on the screen to fix the problem, or contact a computer repair shop for help.

Applications slowing down

When it comes to slow or hanging applications, the potential causes are numerous. However, the most common cause is directly related to the computer’s memory and processing power. Your computer memory, or random access memory, stores data temporarily while programs are running—a slowdown may point to a lack of memory storage space. Other reasons applications run slowly include missing system updates and your computer not having enough hard drive space. If you don’t have enough hard drive space, try scanning, cleaning and optimizing the hard drive.

Missing DLL files

DLL stands for Dynamic-Link Library. DLL files retain information your operating system needs in order to perform certain functions. Sometimes your computer loses DLL files, or they become damaged. If your PC cannot read a DLL file, it won’t be able to properly respond in certain situations. If you receive an error message every time you try to perform a specific function, like saving a file, this is a sign of a corrupt or missing DLL file. You can restore missing or damaged DLL files by downloading them back onto your computer.

Applications won’t install

Although there are many reasons why an application might refuse to install on your computer, one sticks out from the rest, and it’s not as problematic as other possibilities: the issue could be caused by a lack of hard drive space. And there’s a simple way to fix it, hopefully—if your computer doesn’t have enough space on the hard drive, try freeing up some space by getting rid of unused or unneeded folders and files. This includes temporary files, data for uninstalled software and duplicate files.
