Five Common Mistakes That Slow Down Your Computer

April 29, 2019

Laptop and desktop computers are not cheap pieces of technology. You invest in one with the intention of using it for as long as possible, but whether you use a PC or Mac, all computers slow down eventually. If you feel as though you need to seek laptop service or computer repair in St. Charles County, MO, there are a few things you might want to try before scheduling an appointment. Here are five common mistakes that can cause computers to slow down:

  • Not emptying the trash bin: Deleted files are not immediately wiped from your hard drive when you hit the “delete” button. To prevent computer slowdown, you have to clear your computer’s trash bin of deleted files from time to time. Trash goes into a holding area of the hard drive, where it can be restored later in case it was deleted by mistake. Before manually emptying the trash bin, check the contents for anything important. An empty bin can speed up performance and add room to your hard drive.
  • A cluttered desktop: A chaotic and disorganized desktop makes it difficult to find documents and files. Not only that, but this clutter can really slow down your computer. The desktop is designed as a place for storing stuff in neat files to make it easy for you to navigate your laptop for the information you need, not as a dumping ground for everything on your machine. The fact of the matter is that having a large number of files spread out on your desktop is slowing down your computer. Organize those files to avoid multiple widgets running on your desktop, which could also be contributing to computer slowdown.
  • Using old software: New software is meant to work better with your operating system, which is why updates roll out often and install quickly. For user convenience and the health of your computer, computer manufacturers recommend setting your device to update software automatically. Computer companies send out software updates for good reason, so don’t ignore or forget to download them!
  • Running too many programs: New computers are made to run fast and perform without glitches. However, leaving too many programs to run at the same time may slow it down. The easiest thing to do here is to take an inventory of how many programs you use and how often you use them, because the more programs you have running, the more work you make for your system, and the more it bogs down your computer. When you remove programs, check that they are fully uninstalled and make sure all corresponding files have also been deleted.
  • Rarely rebooting: Never or rarely rebooting is something many of us are guilty of. You might leave it in sleep mode to save time waiting for the computer to power up the next time you use it, but not rebooting or shutting off your computer is not so great for the device. In fact, restarting your computer is good for its overall health. It flushes RAM, fixes memory leaks and performs updates and diagnostics.
