Be Productive—Even with Slow Internet

Be Productive—Even with Slow Internet

April 24, 2020

With more people working from home, you may notice your internet connection is slower than usual, or you face a slow time a couple hours a day. This is annoying, and feels like it breaks your productivity. Fortunately, dealing with slow internet in St. Charles County, MO is not a matter of patience, but of knowing how to manage it. Here are six tips on staying productive, even when your connection crawls:

  • Check your speed: There are tools available online to check your internet speed. Reaching the maximum speed possible on your internet plan is normally impossible, although you should at least get fairly close to your plan. But other factors can get in the way. Internet companies may slow your connection speed after you use up your monthly bandwidth allowance, or it uses an ADSL connection, which often sentences you to slow internet forever.
  • Check hardware: Slow internet speed may not be entirely your carrier’s fault. Your modem could be acting up, or there might be shortcomings in your computer. If your connection is slow with all devices at home, it is likely a connection problem. Start by resetting your modem and router. However, if it is confined to one computer, the computer is likely the problem. Take it in to see if it needs repairs.
  • Reduce bandwidth use: Bandwidth-hogging apps and multiple devices on one wi-fi connection can slow things down when you are attempting to upload that video for work. Install ad blockers to prevent extraneous things from eating up your bandwidth. Turn off your flash plugins, too. While this will not completely solve your slow connection problem, it will at least make the situation manageable.
  • Prioritize tasks: Hopefully, not all of your online tasks require quick internet. If you know there is a time of day when your connection slows down, save the low-bandwidth tasks for that period. Likewise, if your bandwidth is strongest early in the morning, go right into the high-demand tasks. You can also eliminate tasks from your browser (e.g., do your writing tasks in a text editor rather than in Google Docs).
  • Set up a secondary browser: The browser with all the bells and whistles will not run well on slow connections. Install a browser where you can use mobile or html versions of your websites and disable images. Or, you can optimize your primary browser for these situations. Basically, create a low-bandwidth plan for these slow-connection moments and reduce the frustration.
  • Call your ISP: Sometimes, it is just time to complain. If your connection will not behave no matter what you do, call your ISP. They may not have done anything wrong, but double checking to see if they can help on their end is often worth the effort. You may learn that it’s time to upgrade your leased modem or check the wiring at your home.
